Crowning moment as kings have arrived some marine areas

Roll out the red carpet!

King salmon fishing has kicked in full, and surprisingly, it was remarkably well on the coast and some open areas of Puget Sound.

"Ilwaco did really well, and we see quite a few boats with limits, but not much (fishing) effort," said Wendy Beeghly, a state fish biologist and salmon coastal wildlife. "Westport picked up considerably and was good (Tuesday and Monday), and boats of both the private and charter did pretty well," said Beeghly."The guys ended up not going very far in the ocean (which is the fish off the coast of Ocean Shores), and ended up on the bat (for 8 buoys and pier sunk) in the afternoon. "

At Neah Bay we have not seen a lot of effort but it was not too bad on Saturday, but slow enough by Sunday. Push the turnout was light and fisherman just a few chinook caught.

The best places are out of Mushroom Rock, Umatilla Reef and the Swiftsure Bank on the north coast.

Beeghly said entire coast there was a fairly high margin (hatchery) (Chinook with adipose fin), and not many fishermen have had to release a large number of legal-size kings, although they are releasing many sub-legal sized fish.

Ocean King Fishing by the numbers:

Ilwaco: June 18-19 135 fishermen with 136 Chinook for an average of 1.01 fish per rod.

Westport: 18-19 June 1375 anglers caught 630 fish for an average of 0.46 per stem.

La Push: 42 anglers caught 10 fish 18-19 June for Chinook 0.23 average per rod.

Neah Bay: 216 anglers caught 81 Chinook June 18-19 to 0.38 fish per rod average.

Coastwide: 1,768 anglers June 18-19 caught 857 chinook for 0.48 fish per rod average.

The late June hatchery chinook sport quota is 4,800, and so far 18 percent of that has been taken.

The northern coast off La Push and Neah Bay will get another day of halibut fishing on June 30 after state Fish and Wildlife determined enough remained in the sport catch quota.

"We had enough left in the quota to open it on a Thursday (June 30), and we got a lot of call wanting to know why we could do a weekend day and we just didn't have enough," said Heather Reed, a state Fish and Wildlife coastal halibut biologist.

About 13,081 pounds are left the sport catch quota.

"The weather wasn't great during the last opener, we also had strong currents, and it has been pretty much a lack of (angler) effort rather than a lack of success this season," Reed said.
