Rock History: LaVerne Baker

Move forward a couple of years in the same small country club. We find a local teenage band rockabilly cover (The Joker) to a favorite dance. Yeah, "Jim Dandy" again. Funny how much difference two years can make in a child's life. Previously, the hectic pace of the song Laverne thrilled baseball players roped in "slow" moonie eyes dancing with girls. Jim Dandy meant we could detach the choke hold and dance with all this pent-up energy, far, far away from each other. After 20 or so hits almost twenty years LaVerne a USO tour in the late sixties.She went to the tour in Viet Nam and other parts of Southeast Asia. During this tour, she came down with pneumonia and possibly a collapsed lung. The Tour put in a hospital and left, as they went with the rest of the travel schedule. Once cured, it is in a foreign country without money, transportation, friends or communication skills. She literally hung and hiked through a couple of South-East Asia tries to find his way. It was a great act at the time. She was married to popular comedian Slappy White. She had money and tour fees coming in.She had an agent and you think of commitments. However, once it is released from the hospital of the Navy of the Philippines, she fell completely out of sight. Or the story goes. Apparently, it remained at the marine base for the twenty two years as director of entertainment for a night club base. In 1994, she had diabetes so bad both legs were removed. She was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1991. In 1989, she received the Pioneer Status with the rhythm and Blues Foundation. (In its very first year) The tube Jim Dandy was named one of 500 best songs in the formation of rock and roll. Rolling Stone Magazine listed it as number 343 in all time Rock and Roll songs.
