This is, after all, the home of the man who created a Tony-award winning theater and still works there today.

Adams’ partner in the festival and in life, Barbara, passed away a few years ago but her presence is still a part of the home on Leigh Hill above Cedar City. Tributes to her are found throughout the home and evidence of the couple’s four children and the resulting grandchildren carry on her legacy. Then there’s her Yorkshire terrier, Maximus Minimus, who still lords over the home — at least when Adams isn’t around. Adams says the dog used to fall asleep in the recliner with his late wife and continued to do so by himself after Barbara passed away. Now the wee beastie — called Max for short — has a new companion in Cinderella, another Yorkie whose name is shortened to Ella.

Although Adams is the only human occupant left in the home, the furnishings and the home all tell stories of those who lived there. In true Shakespeare fashion there’s a balcony above the living room. The Adams family built the home 46 years ago when there were only a handful of neighbors and Ridge Road was still gravel. The family moved in between the birth of their third and fourth children, both sons. Because there were young children in the home, Adams designed it in a U-shape to surround the backyard on three sides.

“We built it around our yard to protect our kids,” Adams says. “There were rattlesnakes and tarantulas. Barbara had to be able to look out any window and see the kids.” On one side of the home stands the kitchen where a wall of sunlight immediately captures attention. The collection of artistic suns began quite simply when Adams purchased a few sun paintings at a student art show primarily to support the student artists.

His wife mounted a few coasters with sun designs she had purchased in Sun Valley, Idaho, and added them to the wall. Visitors began to notice the sun collection and soon the couple started receiving images of suns as gifts to add to the collection. Adams says he eventually had to ask friends and family members to stop giving them suns because they were out of room. On the other side of the house is Adams’ study with another intriguing collection. He says he basically lives in the room, which features paintings, sculptures and wood carvings all depicting a single character: Don Quixote, the fictional protagonist from the world of literature and theater.
