Laurence “Luckyman” Beall — Itinerant roots musician Laurence Beall left home at the age of 15 and hasn’t looked back since, referencing that ongoing journey by stating in his bio, “If I sing you a song it ain’t about how I think it feels.” Depending on what song of his you listen to, Beall’s music could be called blues, rockabilly, country or just plain old rock ‘n’ roll; taking a cue from similarly minded group The Blasters, I’ll just say it’s great American music. Beall’s currently based out of Lexington and playing mostly solo shows that find him singing, strumming and kick-drumming, one-man band style. K. Oliver Call To Preserve — Florida quintet Call To Preserve probably won’t convert any new hardcore fans, but it’s unlikely it’ll turn any off, either. The pieces are all there, just as they’re supposed to be. Fast, urgent parts drop out suddenly into half-time slogs. John Ellis, the vocalist, delivers his lines with a gruff, guttural growl. You’ve heard it before, and you’ll hear it again. Call To Preserve’s Kentucky-based tourmates, Dead Icons, offer a similar, if more metal-influenced approach to the genre. Grimy, Entombed-ish guitar tones and a rhythmic base that moves easily between Judge-style stomp and metalcore abruptness complement a vocalist who trades hardcore’s customary dry bark with a wetter-sounding growl. B. Reed Tetrarch — I confess: Given that its name is derived from the tetrarchy that ruled Roman Empire from 285 to 324, I expected Tetrarch to owe much to Botch’s groundbreaking We Are the Romans mathcore. Instead, the Atlanta quintet is an impressive new-school thrash act, blurring Kill ‘Em All-era Metallica chugalug, fleet-footed Iron Maiden solos and New Wave of British Heavy Metal a la Judas Priest. With Your Chance to Die, Thrown to Belial, Ninjaloot, Luminoth. P. Wall Phil Yates — Phil Yates traipsed about town in the early part of the millennium, schlepping engaging and endearingly silly folk tunes about French-Canadian waitresses and kazoos. After bouncing around Chicago and Los Angeles, Yates returned to his native Vermont, where his tunes have dipped into winsome, twangy country-rock akin to Old 97’s and Clem Snide.

While I don't think the iPad is a device for schools and serious stuff, it's awesome for when you want to watch a movie in an airplane or bus. In an airplane, you can't use your laptop since there isn't enough space to open it because of the seat in front of you, so the only way you could watch a movie on a plane is either by taking an iPhone/iPod Touch, or using a portable DVD player (yuck!). But if you want a bigger screen, you can get the iPad and it will fit in the 10cm space between your head and the seat in front of you perfectly. In fact, DVD pricing is not the most important factor for Walmart and I suspect Target as well. Both companies employ sophisticated marketing techniques to draw customers into the store and get them to part with more money than they originally intended to spend. Brand-name promotions, item placements and even Walmart's "don't ask, don't tell" return policies are examples. The use of loss-leaders, selling products at a small loss, has proven to be one of the most powerful customer draws. DVDs are the numero-uno loss leader draw of most Walmarts, particularly those in the broad midsection of the country where it's often difficult to find a video rental store, much less a Tower, Borders or Virgin Atlantic store. I recently spent the summer in the Hill Country of Texas and became quite familiar with the Friday evening surge when customers would stream into a Walmart to pick up a DVD for the weekend and then decide to do a little additional shopping "seein' as they was there." I think the stores are rightfully fearful of the loss in foot traffic and the consequential loss of impulse purchases if movie downloads become popular. For the same reason, simply openning up an online store will not insulate them from losses since the profits accrued from DVD sales don't generally arise from the DVDs themselves, but from the additional shopping that is all but inevitable once you enter the store. I regularly disable 3G so I can make calls. On long road trips I drive with a Verizon powered WiFi Access Point so I can have data (wifi) and AT&T's Edge network. Way, way, way. way too many dropped calls on 3G. No way to get through a 20 min con call using AT&T's 3G network (though I suspect the iphone itself may cause some of these drops). So Counsumerreports publishes that they can't recommend the iPhone 4 due to antenna.
