Local interior designers featured multiple times in magazine
The combination of architecture and design skills has helped Bauer/Clifton Interiors make such a splash in the design scene that a home design magazine can’t get enough of them. Alaska Home has featured the local firm six times, the latest being a cover story for the summer issue.
Jeremy Bauer and Jason Clifton have been in business since 2006, making their first appearance in the magazine the following year. The latest story details their work on a residential kitchen and dining area. Clifton describes how a large portion of the 6-week project involved opening up the areas to the entryway and living room to suit the owners’ lifestyle. He said the wall that separated the area wasn’t working out for their entertainment and musical performances.
“It certainly was a feat in itself in order to get that wall removed,” he said.
Residential kitchen and bath redesigns like this are the firm’s primary focus. Besides remodeling homes, they also have a few commercial properties on their résumé, such as Sandpiper Cafe, Canton House, Zen and Jaded.
The pair’s separate backgrounds make for an advantageous alliance. Bauer studied at Kansas State University, getting one degree in architecture and another in architectural engineering. Clifton studied interior design at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. They feel this makes a good teaming. Clifton said he comes through with the form and styling materials while his partner concentrates on functionality, layout and efficiency.
“It comes down to the classic combination of form and function,” Clifton said.
Bauer said that as architecture looks more at the big picture of a building, it gives a good lead-in on a project, while the design aspect builds on it to satisfy client wishes. Clifton added that infusing the original architecture to create a cohesive design is also important.
“When the two of us enter into a space, it helps us really know what the capabilities of that space are,” said Bauer.
The firm has another big development on the way. It’s in the process of opening a new design studio downtown across from Silverbow, which the owners hope to be fully moved into by the end of summer.
