Many words of wisdom for Spaulding graduates
ROCHESTER — Spaulding High School students were told on Friday night to "live the life you want to live" before stepping onto the stage at Hugo Bolin Field to receive their diplomas and leave their high school years behind them.
The words of encouragement came from Class of 2011 Co-President Ian Martin during the school's graduation ceremony. The event, which began at 6:30 p.m., saw 274 red-and-white clad Spaulding graduates commence with the next stage in their young adulthood.
The processional was followed by an invocation by Class of 2011 Co-Vice President Corinne Baita, and a performance of Rascal Flatt's "My Wish" by students Ian Martin, who was also Class of 2011 Co-President, Ryan McQuade, Alyson Towle and Ben Douglas.
A welcoming address was then given by Martin, who reflected on the life lessons that the class had learned over the last four years.
"We're finally done and we've learned a great deal, but it wasn't all academics," said Martin.
Martin said that he knew his fellow graduates would be making a difference in the world, whether it is immediate or over many years.
"Live the life you want to live and be the person you want to be," said Martin.
Faculty member Erin Kelly gave the first commencement address, in which she acknowledged that she was "also a freshman" four years before the ceremony, as she had started her tenure at Spaulding just as the graduating class was coming in. Kelly said she was happy to see the way they had developed over the years.
"You as a class have excelled together, cried together, suffered together and grown together," Kelly said.
Kelly went on to give the students lessons and rules that she had hoped they could use as they enter adulthood. Lessons included accepting failure as part of a greater learning process, choosing battles wisely as to save strength for the important ones and having fun.
"Working hard is important, but so is playing hard," said Kelly.
The second commencement address was given by faculty member Sarah Reardon, who informed the students that life after high school would be filled with challenges.
"Earning your high school diploma is not a free pass," said Reardon.
During her speech, Reardon reminded students that, as they approach these challenges, it is important to "bounce back from these situations" and to not hold grudges.

Recognizing the influence of a particular theorist's impact is particularly important at the time of death, which is the time where the development of a particular theory moves from the originator to the followers. This column serves as a tribute to Imogene M. King, and is dedicated to her wisdom in promoting the conceptual system she developed.
