Summer programs open at Greeboro library

Ottawa South kids can grab their water wings and jump into some summer reading at the Greenboro library this week, as registration opens for the library’s splashy new July programs.

The programs range from toddler story time to pre-teen programs to TD Summer Reading Club activities, all under the theme “Splash!” which encompasses under-the-sea, beach and pirate themes in keeping with the reading club theme across Canada.

The reading club, an annual nation-wide program that encourages children age four to 12 to keep reading throughout their summer break, kicks off in Greenboro on Saturday, June 25 at 2 p.m. and will continue throughout the summer months with prizes, games and activities to motivate kids to keep reading.

For toddlers and families, July’s drop-in storytime programs will take place at the Greenboro branch on Tuesday, July 12 and 26 in English, Wednesday, July 6 and 20 in French, and Saturday, July 9 in both languages. All storytimes begin at 10:30 a.m.

For kids aged six to eight, a bilingual Mysteries of the Deep program will run on Wednesday, July 13 at 10:30 a.m. for kids who dare to discover what’s lurking below the surface. Another bilingual story session, this time focusing on campfire stories, will take place Wednesday, August 17 at 10:30 a.m.

For nine to 12-year-olds, Monday, July 11, 18 and 25 at 2 p.m. will feature one-hour bilingual programs that will take young readers from the sand to the sea and back again. A similar bilingual storytime will be offered on Saturday, July 16 at 2 p.m.

Special programs throughout the summer include a text-based sculpture program with local artist Katrina Bergman on Wednesday, June 20 for kids aged six to 12, and a bilingual heritage toys craft hour with staff from the Billings Estate National Historic Site on Thursday, July 21.

For teens, the library will also host two anime nights from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 6 and Wednesday August 3.

The Kids Campfire Book: Official Book of Campfire Fun

- Jane Drake & Ann Love

For Ages 9 and up – Whether readers are novice or experienced campers, the information presented in this in-depth exploration of camping will make their next excursions into the woods enjoyable, successful, and safe. A wide variety of pertinent topics is included: how to select the right wood for the specific type of fire that is being built; recipes for food to cook over an open fire; games to play; songs, complete with the music and lyrics, to sing; ghost stories for spine-tingling telling; helpful hints for interacting–or not–with wildlife and insects; guides to viewing the night sky; and the appropriate gear for sleeping under the stars.

There is a wide variance in the difficulty of the projects; some definitely require adult guidance or supervision while others can be done independently by eight- or nine-year-olds. Younger children will enjoy hearing the stories and being guided in their gazing. The short legends and myths from a variety of cultures are well told; each story’s origins are identified.
