Rain in forecast

Much to the delight of fire-weary residents and firefighters, rain is forecast to return to the area today and every day for the next week.

Chances for rain are as high as 50 percent in Flagler County today and 30 percent in Volusia County, according to the National Weather Service.

While officials stress it will take more than spotty showers to have a long-term impact on the largest fires and long-term drought, they hope to see steady improvement in the days ahead.

Daytime high temperatures are expected to remain in the mid-90s through the weekend.

"When my crews got here, there was a lot of fire," Ponce Inlet Fire Chief Dan Scales said. "It was basically going to burn the walkway up. But my guys got here and at least controlled it."

Scales said harsh winds pushing north made the flames harder to control -- and more likely to spread. Firefighters from Port Orange, Edgewater and South Daytona also came to help.

"If we didn't get on this (fire) pretty quick," Scales said, "it'd probably be in the Shores by now."

Elsewhere seven fires are listed as active, including the 2,397-acre Maytown Road fire, which is 90 percent contained.
