Life's grand on NH logs to luxury tour

New Hampshire’s North Country is a world away from the tattoo parlors, interstate liquor stores and fireworks warehouses that shadow Massachusetts along many border communities.

The thick forests that blanket the White Mountains north of the beaches, outlet malls and even the Lakes Region offer a hint at the North Country’s proud logging roots. But a deeper investigation reveals a rugged beauty inherent in the Granite State that can go unnoticed.

New Hampshire Grand’s Logs to Luxury Tour transports visitors from the state’s 19th century logging industry to the height of opulence at one of the state’s Grand resorts. Forestry and hospitality mingle to create a timber-influenced fusion that combines the rustic with the extravagant.

The tour begins with the Log Drive along the Androscoggin River, where immigrants found opportunity in the region’s mills from Berlin to Errol. (From Boston, get on Interstate 93 North and drive for about three hours.)

Northern Forest Heritage Park in Berlin (say BER-lin, not Ber-LIN — a semantic detail that came about after the outbreak of WWII), at 961 Main St., features a re-creation of a logging camp. Large log structures make up a 10-acre village along the rushing Androscoggin. Boat tours along the river usher passengers past unspoiled shoreline, boom piers and the abundant wildlife that is drawn to the riverbanks. (To book: 603-752-7202. Adults $15; children $8; children younger than 5 free.) The museum across the street from the logging camp — the Brown House (which is white and is actually the oldest wooden structure in northern New England) — connects all the dots and provides a detailed look at how the logging industry helped shape the state’s beginnings.

A 40-minute drive along a heavily wooded and moose-intensive Route 16 through the Thirteen Mile Woods and into Dixville Notch puts visitors at the fiercely beautiful Balsams Grand Resort. Set dramatically at the bottom of an acute drop in the roadway, the Balsams resembles a European c astle plunked into the middle of a jaw-dropping notch carved out of the cliffs and mountains that surround it.

The height of top-notch hospitality when it was first opened in 1895, much of the resort feels unchanged since the early parts of the 1900s.
