Idol's search for new country

In the nearly six years since Underwood was crowned American Idol winner, she's focused firmly on building her career in the US.

And it's paid off. She's got five Grammy Awards to her name, and has sold more than 13 million albums in her career to date.

But with her profile well and truly established in America, Underwood is looking further afield, hence her first visit to Australia this week.

"I just think it's time for something new, broaden the horizons," Underwood told Insider from her Nashville home before boarding a flight to Australia.

"If anything, it's purely selfish. It's not like: 'OK I'm done here, moving on' you know. I just want to do things I haven't already done and have fun with it. There's a lot of countries I have not been to and there are a lot of places I haven't seen for myself and I'm not getting any younger so you know now's the time."

Underwood is a superstar in the US, much loved as a cross-over country sweetheart. She says it's been a full-time job writing and recording albums, touring and supporting the releases there.

"We've been trying for a few years now but we could never get our schedules to click and to work together and just make it happen," explained Underwood, who will perform live on Seven's Dancing With The Stars tonight.

"You know it's a long haul to get your direction so I don't think any of my immediate friends and family have ever been so this is uncharted territory."

Like many of her country counterparts, including fellow cross-over pop country star Taylor Swift, Underwood lives away from the hype of Hollywood or New York.

She and new husband, hockey player Mike Fisher, live in Nashville, neighbours with Australians Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman.

"Your very own Keith and Nicole, live here. I've heard Nicole talk very fondly about it here and how she can just be a normal person here.

"It's a big small town. You run into everyone at the grocery store and everybody's friendly and I enjoy living here for sure."

Underwood and Fisher, who plays for the Nashville Predators, wed in the US last July.

Between enjoying her new married life and working, there's not much time for anything else and kids are a way off.

"Not right now, you know we both are on the same page and we just want to be married for a bit and be able to travel and be able to enjoy each other and our careers and not have to worry about being so responsible because you can't go back once you have kids," she says. "So we want to make sure we are 100 per cent ready.
