Molyneux schaamt zich voor Fable III

"Ik weet dat ik waarschijnlijk zou moeten zeggen dat het een geweldige game is puur op basis van wat het doet, maar de game scoort op Metacritic gemiddeld ergens laag in de 80. Daar schaam ik me behoorlijk voor, om eerlijk te zijn, en ik neem de schuld op me. Het is niet de schuld van het team," aldus Molyneux.

De Xbox 360- en PC-versies samen zijn in totaal bijna vijf miljoen keer verkocht. Toch neemt Molyneux met een goed verkoopcijfer geen genoegen. "Dat is niet de droom. Het is niet de game geworden waar ik op had gehoopt. Ik dacht dat de mechaniek achter de regeer-gedeeltes erg goede ideeën waren. We hebben echter niet genoeg tijd gehad om de ideeën uit te werken." Molyneux laat weten dat Fable III in twee jaar werd ontwikkeld en dat dit de kortste ontwikkelingstijd is die Lionhead Studios ooit aan een game heeft besteed. Molyneux erkent dat door de relatief korte ontwikkelingstijd, enkele delen van de game minder goed zijn uitgewerkt en dat hij zich daarom kan vinden in de kritiek die recensenten hebben geuit op Fable III.

Peter Molyneux heeft aan her roer gestaan van echte juweeltjes. Hij hoeft zich niet te schamen voor fable 3. Het is misschien geen absolute topgame maar zeker geen slechte game. Hij is zelf waarschijnlijk nooit tevreden over zijn creaties. Minder gouden bergen beloven en gewoon je ding doen. En hij zeikt elke keer de vorige editie van fable af wanneer er een volgende komt.

Hij moet zich wel schamen. Bij elke nieuwe game roept hij vanaf de hoogste torens dat dit spel een revolutie in de gamewereld gaat worden. Het eindresultaat mist altijd features die volgens hem met 100% zekerheid in de game zouden zitten. Kan iemand zich nog herinneren dat hij zei dat je in Fable III als koning legers onder je had? Dat je je koninkrijk kon vormen zoals je maar wou? Misschien heb ik een beta-versie gespeeld want die dingen zaten er absoluut niet in. In plaats daarvan moesten we een handjevol 'moeilijke' morele kwesties oplossen et voila; eindscherm.

FTG Review: Dungeons (PC), Realmforge Studios and Kalypso Media ...

The folks at RealmForge Studios and Kalyspo Media heard the whispers of PC gamers pining for a Dungeon Keeper 3 and decided to do something about it by creating Dungeons, an unofficial-in-a-court-of-law spiritual successor to the Dungeon Keeper.

Is this game the glorious update to the game we PC gamers have been dreaming about, or is it a cheap knockoff of the champion?

If you’ve ever built a PC rig by hand, you’re probably intimately familiar with both titles, as they did something that had never been done before.  You played the role of the malevolent ruler of a diabolical playground filled with traps and henchmen whose sole goal was to destroy any goodie-two-shoes heroes who dared to oppose you.  Unfortunately, despite the absolutely brilliant premise, the games faded out, and every now and again, you would hear about a sequel whispered on the wind from your favorite gaming source.

Well, the folks at RealmForge Studios and Kalyspo Media also heard these whispers and decided to do something about it by creating Dungeons unfold in front of me.  You start as an evil overlord who is stripped of his powers after being betrayed by his demonic girlfriend, Kalypso (RealmForge trying to say something here about Kalypso Games?).  Seeking revenge, you start rebuilding your empire from the ground floor with the help of your personal toadie, a goblin who looks and sounds remarkably similar to Gnarl from Overlord 2 -style “desires” have been met, you slaughter them and harvest their souls.  The more satisfied a hero’s soul with treasure and experience, the more soul power you get to increase the prestige of your dungeon.  The more prestige you have, the more powerful the creatures you can create and knick-knacks you can purchase for your dungeon.

Unlike the predecessors Dungeon is borrowing heavily from, you are actually given an Overlord style avatar to run around with to help with the busy work around the dungeon.  Your minion goblins do most of the heavy lifting, but it’s nice to be able to jump into your overlord and wail on a band of adventures as they’re fleeing for the dungeon’s exit.  As the game progresses, your overlord levels up, meaning you can add points to a talent tree for more powerful attacks or more efficient building options, as well as attribute points to level stats.  Unfortunately, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, having an avatar you control becomes a burden at times.  As the baddest bad ass in the dungeon, tromping adventurers can be fun, but that time should be better spent building your dungeon and it gets easy to forget to do this until you’ve wasted too much time.
