Fine arts are endless

If you didn't make it to the Smoky Hill River Festival on Saturday, it should all still be there today -- unless everything gets sucked into the black hole to the center of the earth that opened up under a coffee table in booth 81 of the fine art area.

"That's where Alice went," Burlington, Ky., artist Douglas Durkee said, looking into the seemingly bottomless lighted tunnel down the center of the coffee table.

"Everybody says 'Wow!'" he said. "Once in a while you hear a 'Wowee!'"

One shopper Saturday morning backed away from the table, saying she was afraid of heights.

Perfect weather continued for Saturday's festivalgoers, and 31,000 took advantage of the clear, not-too-hot day to take in the sights, sounds and tastes of the 35th annual event.

The crowd Saturday included several festival regulars, including Glen Coxon, of Salina, who was reclining under his sportbrella, a combination umbrella and tent he found at Sam's, near Stage II.

Coxon said he and his wife make festival plans every year, and if anyone asks to borrow his button he tells them to buy their own and support the cause.

"I can't say enough about this festival," he said. "I think the people who arrange for the acts do a great job. This is a smaller community, but it's not like we're accepting second-rate acts."

Lynne Olivigni, who now lives in Marshall, Minn., said she comes back to Salina where her family lived for 20 years and meets her daughters at the festival. Saturday, she and 1-year-old granddaughter, Addie, were camped in their regular spot under a tree near Stage II.

"This tree was teeny-weeny when we started coming here, but now it makes pretty good shade," she said. She said she prefers Stage II, where there is a smaller crowd and more of a breeze.

Some recent watercolor pieces created by long-time festival exhibitor Terry Maxwell were featured in an exhibit in the Fine Art information tent.

Festival arts patron Randall Hardy said he was thrilled to acquire his first piece by Maxwell, a black and white picture called "Haywired." "It jumped off the wall at me," Hardy said. "I've never owned a Terry Maxwell, and I've always admired his work."

Hardy said he gets all his Christmas shopping done at the festival, and he also enjoyed a corn dog on Saturday.

For new arrivals today, a couple of other things to watch for include an art installation near the Kenwood bridge and a participatory performance project in the tennis practice court.
