Attleboro High School Students Can Now Chat on the Cell Between Classes

Attleboro High School  students can now chat it up between classes.

The School Committee on Wednesday night approved changes to the school's cell phone policy. The changes, created by the administration and student body, will now allow students to use their phones in the hallways during passing periods between classes, which was previously not allowed. The updated policy does prohibit the use of phones on stairs or stairwells due to safety reasons.

“The general consensus is that it was reasonable,” Attleboro High School Principal Jeffery Newman said in a previous committee meeting on the topic.

But with an updated policy comes an update to the punishment for violations. The school’s handbook now states that a student will receive a 20-minute detention for a first offense, and a referral to the dean, extended detention and a phone call to parents for a second offense. A third offense involves a referral to the dean, an extended detention and a parent meeting with the dean.

The phone calls and meetings with parents are a key part of the policy, according to Newman.

“We’re trying to get parents to help us with governing when it is appropriate for students to use cell phones," he said.

Voted to cancel the school committee meeting scheduled for July 12, making the next school committee meeting August 15.

I wasn't able to make it to the meeting last night and Channel 9 only showed a black screen. Was there any discussion of a change to the Elementary school hours? I've heard rumors and some schools have adjusted hours on their websites, but I've not seen anything sent home to notify parents.

Another question I have, I for one did not get an abbreviated superintendent report in my Kindergarten child's report card yesterday - did anyone else?
