Apache shuts Van Gogh for repairs

Maintenance at the field's floating, production, storage and offloading vessel, Ningaloo Vision, will be carried out over the next few weeks, spokesman David Parker told Reuters.

The company declined to elaborate on the nature of the maintenance work that will be done at the FPSO. It also declined to say how this would affect crude exports.

Apache may have to skip exports in August, a trader told Reuters.

Upstream reported last month that needed repairs to the FPSO could force Apache to shut Van Gough for up to four months.

Chief operating officer Rodney Eichler had cited problems with the turret mooring seals and the mooring anchoring system, according to the Upstream report.

The field, located 32 miles (53 kilometres) north-northwest of Exmouth, has a planned production rate of about 40,000 barrels per day. But production had fallen to just 9200 bpd in the first quarter of this year.

Temporary corrections had boosted Van Gough production back up to 30,000 bpd, Upstream reported last month.

Exports of the heavy sweet Van Gogh crude have been disrupted since October as the FPSO has been shut several times for maintenance.

Apache, the Van Gogh field operator, has a 52.5% stake in the field. Inpex, Japan's top oil explorer, holds the remaining interest.
