Football: Week 1 at New Haven – Notes and Analysis

Three things that have worked well

Side of the ball: The West Chester secondary played aggressively against New Haven, picking off four passes. Carl Barnes, who got the start in place of an injured John O'Donnell, Ryan pass intercepted with 7:31 left Osiecki in the first half of the charger 36. The Rams turned the ball down on the ensuing possession.

The Rams second interception came on an attempted punt by New Haven missed late in the second quarter.Punter Chris Scifo mismanaged the pressure, then do as Garo Yepremian to throw the ball, almost in desperation. Matt Colyar took him off at the 39 West Chester, but he had just hit the ball down the Rams would have had in his possession at the New Haven 43. The Rams had to settle for a field goal with four seconds left in the first half.

Bob Sabol of Osiecki interception in the end zone in the final minute of the third quarter set up the Rams' touchdown in the fourth quarter. The interception of Brian Hinderer of New Haven 43 with 9:32 left in regulation put in place Shawn Leo field goal from 28 yards.

Impressive debut Carroll Matt Carroll showed why he won the post split second string to West Chester in training camp. Going-to nine-11 for 110 yards and a touchdown and leading the Rams with 90 Gold yards rushing in your game collegiate first time in two years is certainly a good way to get noticed. Carroll seemed to be the most effective way that Sean Paul McCartney (14-for-28, 173 yards), who threw a few passages that were more like curveballs Cliff Lee goes to a spiral. However, head coach Bill McCartney Zwann committed to the starting quarterback.

Keyser, Lee step to fill the hole DePalma: In limited action last season as a second, LaRon Lee showed flashes of genius with his pass catching ability and speed. Against New Haven, Lee caught five passes for 84 yards, including a touchdown 11 yards on the first possession of the third quarter of West Chester. The Penn Manor junior should be one of McCartney (or Carroll) go to the receivers to fill the void left by graduation Dan DePalma. Other than a dropped pass, Lee continues to improve with each passing game.

Keyser, who also saw extensive playing time last season as a redshirt freshman, caught seven passes for 69 yards against New Haven. The play's most remarkable catch was not redshirt sophomore, but a personal foul penalty that pushed the Rams in the red zone (the New Haven 19, the flag 15 yards pushed the Rams back to the New Haven 34) late in the first quarter. West Chester had to settle for a field goal.
