Racing action highlights holiday weekend in province

Calvin Rankin of Quispamsis won the first race of the series on May 29.

"We've always enjoyed going to race at Shediac," Rankin said.

It will be a busy weekend for Rankin and his No. 45 Clear Power Solution sponsored car as he raced at Petty International Raceway Friday and will then travel to Shediac for the Sunday race.

"The first thing is you have to have some luck," Rankin said.

Because it's not a regular points-championship race, it's always a bit of a mystery as to which cars will show up for the Maritime Super Series.

"You usually get a mixture of cars from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia," Rankin said.

The slate will also feature the 50-lapper for the Shediac Sportsman cars and the 4-cylinders will run a 35-lap feature race. Action gets underway Sunday at 2 p.m.

After practice ends today, the track will host RC Warz. Fans who have tickets for Sunday's race will get a chance to race 1/16th radio-controlled stock cars. Community Days continue at the track with free admission for all New Brunswick families with postal codes E2A thru E2S.

Fox Fanfest at Speedway 660

At Speedway 660 today all classes will take to the track for the Fox Fanfest with the Pro Stock, Sportsman, Street Stock, Bandolero and 4-Cylinder cars running for the win and trying to gain points towards their respective series championships. Admission is free for fans that visit one of the Geary speedway's sponsors.

In Saint John, fans can stop by the Leisure Time RV Center for tickets and in Fredericton they can visit Fox Radio, Auto Machinery, O'Leary Buick GMC, Riverview Ford, RV World, Fredericton Hyundai, Macleans Sports or Hanwell Village Mart.

In Moncton, tickets are available at the Moncton RV Center. Fans can also get free tickets at the gate by filling out a survey. Action begins at 7 p.m.

Drag racing action revs up

Atlantic Stock/Super Stock drag racing continues today at Raceway Park in Oyster Bed Bridge, P.E.I. Rothesay's Mark and Chris Howes will bring their MOPAR muscle to the track. Carrying the Chevy banner will be defending champion Malcolm London of Saint John with his 1980 Chevy Malibu and Grand Bay-Westfield's Trevor Ervin's 1970 Bow-tie branded Nova. The Moncton contingent will include Terry Knapper in his 1978 Camaro, Don LaVoie in a 2003 Corvette, Dave Garland in a 1967 Camaro and Bill Campbell in a 1969 Fairlane convertible.
