Very possibly what happened was a previous owner titled/tagged it at a higher GVW due to needing a weighted plate on the truck. To save the money, you would be better off to have the title marked back down in weight to get a lower weighted tag. Some states will go off the GVW on the door tag, others will use a book listed weight, and some may want a weight ticket showing the curb weight. When I moved to Fla a few years ago, I was actually better off using a higher weighted truck tag. The tag was not much more than a regular tag, and I didnt have to pay transfer fees that were associated with the lower weight tag.
